Reflection on Unit 2: Formative Assessment

From this unit, I developed a deeper understanding of formative assessment strategies, and various classroom-based techniques such as feedback, self-assessment, peer assessment, diagnostic assessment, and Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs). As learned in unit1, it also reminded me that assessment is not only about grading students but about continuously supporting their learning and helping them grow.
I also learned that formative assessment plays a key role in identifying students’ strengths and areas for improvement. I also understood that feedback is most effective when it is specific, timely, constructive, and balanced. When I am back to my school, I will ensure that my feedback focuses on guiding students rather than simply judging their performance. For example, instead of saying “good” or “wrong,” I will provide clear suggestions such as what they did well and what they can improve on.
Moreover, I learned about self-assessment and peer assessment, which encourage students to become active participants in their learning. When I become a teacher, I will give students opportunities to reflect on their own work using rubrics, checklists, and guided questions. I will also encourage peer feedback in a respectful and structured way so that students can learn from each other. This will help build their confidence, critical thinking, and responsibility.
Diagnostic assessment is another important concept I learned. I will use it at the beginning of a lesson or unit to understand students’ prior knowledge and misconceptions. This will help me plan lessons that are suitable for the learners’ level and ensure that no student is left behind.
In addition, I found Diagnostic assessment and Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) very useful. I will regularly use simple tools such as exit tickets, minute papers, and quick quizzes to check students’ understanding during lessons. These techniques will help me adjust my teaching in real time and make learning more engaging and interactive.
Overall, this unit has changed my perspective on assessment. I now see it as a continuous and supportive process rather than just an evaluation. As a future teacher, I will strive to create a positive learning environment where assessment is used to guide, support, and inspire students to achieve their full potential.
